Letter from a Nazi

Dear Heidi,

Since I have been promoted to an Officer, I have been experiencing far worse things here at the Ebensee camp. We wake up in the morning and wake the Jews, washing our hands in order to avoid the lice that they are infested with. They are forced to wear wooden clogs, and when they fall apart they go barefoot and they're feet are disgusting. We don't feed them much at all, but they deserve it. Even though they aren't fed much,
at beginning of the day we force them to do very hard labor that they complete in wooden clogs.

We torture them. In the summer, we dehydrate them to death. In the winter, we freeze them to death. Everyday, we overwork them to the point where they could die. Plus, we separate them from their own families. I see mothers crying for their children. Men are trying to stay strong for their families, but we break them of their determination within the first week that they are with us--if they last that long, that is.

The head of the camp, Georg Backmayer, is a vicious man. He and the second in command strike fear into the prisoners when they are together. At times I feel sorry for Jews, but then I snap back to the reality of it--they are a filthy race that I don't understand and they must be exterminated. Now that the gas chambers are beginning to be set up, it will be much easier to kill them.

We pile their bodies high and the stench sickens me. We make them dig huge holes in the ground and when they are finished, they crawl into the hole as we shoot them to death. If you cannot stomach it, you are taken away from the scene and another Officer will take your place. I am one of the stronger ones, obviously. I am not sickened by the thought of killing someone if it is the right thing to do.
After all, I need to do my job. Put in my part of work. I don't have the space or the time start feeling like I'm doing something wrong.

We put people who are disabled, old or gay in the gas chambers. One time, we told them they were taking showers. Instead, when they got in the "showers" we made it so that Zyklon B would pour out of it, instead of water. Zyklon B is a terrible gas, that we wanted to test out. So we used it on the prisoners. It worked.

Maybe when the war is over I will finally be able to visit you again. I pray every day that you are all safe at home, and that I will be home with you all soon. Auf Wiedersehen.

Your brother,

Fritz

Letter from a Jew

Dearest Rebecca,

Do not reply this. Burn it after you read it.

This camp is terrible. I can't imagine what has happened here before I came. They have guard dogs and towers, and when a girl tried to escape they put her in front of a wall and shot her to death. It woke the whole camp up.

I don't know how people can do this. Honestly, what have we done to deserve the hatred of Europe? Who does Hitler think he is, killing millions of people like flies? I wish to be home with you, safe by the fireplace.

When we were taken away, we were forced into big trucks and hauled away like sheep. We traveled for days and days, and we had no water or bathrooms. The officers would scream dirty things at us, but Katya told me just to ignore what they were saying. I know it's not true, but I wish that I could just close my ears.

We soon arrived at camp, but they ordered us to strip off our clothes and stand in front of these officers. I was scared that we would be shot, but they just handed us striped uniforms. We were then taken to these big mass showering rooms and we were told that we would be showering, and all of us were shivering and fearing that we were to be gassed to death. But when the showers turned on, water poured out and we were told to wash ourselves. I feel lucky that I am still alive.

But that was pretty much the best part of this terrible journey.

The head of the camp punishes us heavily. A boy who used to be in my barracks was caught stealing bread from the kitchen because his little brother was starving, and the head officer dragged him outside and hung him from a tree by his hands. Then he brought out his vicious dog and had him attack the boy until he was dangling from the tree dead. We were told that if anyone tried stealing again, there were plenty of trees to be hung from. I think that the dog strikes more fear into us than the officer.

Recently the old officer has retired, and he was replaced with a man who is mentally insane. We were hoping that he was better than the previous one, but he still practices the same things. Nothing seems to be getting better.

The only thing that I'm really worried about is getting sent to Auschwitz. Pretty much the only thing that matters is not getting sent away. Auschwitz is a death camp, and they are filled with "infirmaries" where sick patients go. I heard that they conduct experiments on the prisoners that will most likely not recover from it.

I have to go now. It's time for me to finally sleep. I have to get up early morning tomorrow.

Your friend,

Elishama

  6. The ovens used to power the camp (crematoria) ran on human fat (Jews were burned in them)
